Migraines are a neurological condition characterized by recurrent, intense headaches that often present with a throbbing or pulsating pain, typically localized to one side of the head. The headache may be accompanied by other symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and heightened sensitivity to light and sound. Some individuals experience an aura before the headache, which may involve visual disturbances or sensory changes.
Sphenocath is a minimally invasive medical technique used to provide relief from chronic migraines and certain types of headache disorders. The procedure involves the injection of anesthetic or steroid medications into the sphenopalatine ganglion, a cluster of nerve cells located behind the nose and connected to the facial pain pathways.
During the procedure, a thin catheter is gently inserted through the nasal cavity to reach the sphenopalatine ganglion. Once in place, the catheter delivers the medication directly to the targeted nerve area. This approach aims to block or reduce the activity of the pain pathways associated with migraines and other headache types.
The sphenocath procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis and may provide significant relief from headache symptoms for weeks to months. It is often considered for patients who have not responded well to other treatment options.
